If you or a family member have been recently diagnosed with diabetes, you'll be glad to know that Hancock County Health System is here for you. You may be confused or worried about the disease and what it means, but the good news is that diabetes can be managed.
HCHS is certified by the American Diabetes Association to provide education and support to those who are living with the disease. With diabetes, knowledge can save your life. HCHS's trained diabetes educators can work with you one-on-one to answer your questions and help you take charge by watching what you eat, taking your medications, exercising, and monitoring your blood sugars.
Outpatient Diabetes Education
Nutrition diabetes educators focus on the things you can do to live a healthy life, including:
- Managing high and low blood sugars
- Preventing long-term complications
- Coping with psychological aspects
- Incorporating exercise into diabetes care
- Helping individuals make behavior changes to best manage their diabetes
- Managing medication
- Determining food portions
- Reading labels
- Making healthy choices when eating out
- Learning healthy cooking techniques
- Adjusting meal plans to activities and illness
