Hancock County Public Health History

In 1947, Corwith native Harriet Oxley became the first Public Health Nurse for Hancock County. Her duties were much different than that of our nurses today.

She traveled to over 100 rural schools each year to promote adequate dental hygiene, and give TB testing to school children. Preschool clinics were held along with regularly scheduled prenatal classes.

Over the years this agency commonly known as the Hancock County Nursing service has expanded its services to provide skilled nursing intervention for home care clients and continues to provide service and support to families and other community groups who need assistance to maintain optimal health.

In 2003 the agency’s name was changed to Hancock County Public Health Services to reflect the agency’s broader vision and range of services.

In March of 2013, Hancock County Public Health Services was acquired by Hancock County Health System thus the beginning of a county wide health network. Under this system, two divisions continued: 1. Public Health; 2. Home Health. The sharing of programs allow citizens the maximum benefit for their health needs.
